Elizabeth Billy

Manager, Collections Education

What I do at The New York Public Library

I'm the Manager of Collections Education for The New York Public Library’s Center for Educators &  Schools, where I develop and facilitate field trips and educator workshops using the Library’s new permanent exhibition, the Polonsky Exhibition of the Library’s Treasures. I collaborate with colleagues across different departments to create innovative ways of introducing the collections to K-12 students.

Why The New York Public Library

I recommend working for The New York Public Library for many reasons, but especially the talented and inspirational colleagues you will meet and learn from here. There are opportunities to grow while contributing to an organization with an incredible impact. You will have close connection to the collections, which is a big benefit to a curious person who wants to learn.

Who am I?

Prior to this role, I taught in library afterschool and museum settings. I have an MSEd in Museum Education from Bank Street College. Throughout my career, I have been interested in creating "lightbulb" moments for learners. I'm passionate about libraries because they are learner-centered and full of possibilities.

Advice for prospective candidates

If you are considering applying to a role at The New York Public Library, I recommend reviewing the many sites and services that are part of its vast offerings, as well as learning about the broader field of public libraries in advance of an interview. We are storytellers; remember that your application materials and interview are an opportunity to tell your story.
