Cassie Mey

Oral History Producer

What I do at The New York Public Library

Cassie is the Oral History Producer and a reference librarian for the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. She produces and archives the stories of lives in dance through long form oral histories and special interview projects, paying careful attention to include absent voices from the archive. Cassie also supports dancer/scholars in the research process, as well as introduces the general public to the broad and unique collections at the Library for the Performing Arts.

Who am I?

Cassie Mey is a lifelong dancer, listener, scholar, librarian, and the Dance Division's Oral History Producer. As producer, Cassie has recorded over 50 original long-form Dance Oral History Project interviews, launched series of oral histories on tap, street & club dance artists, and oversaw the creation of the COVID-19 Dance Worker Narratives Project. She’s been a returning Civic Liberal Arts teaching fellow at the New School since 2017, and has presented on the Project at Jacob's Pillow, the American Realness Festival, the Dance Studies Association conference, and the Center for Creative Photography. At NYPL since 2009, she formerly cataloged the Merce Cunningham Audio Collection and was the Oral History Assistant. Cassie has performed for and collaborated with New York based dance artists Dean Moss, Molissa Fenley, Jillian Peña, Jesse Phillips-Fein, and Andrea Miller/GALLIM, among others. She holds an MSILS with a Digital Management for Cultural Heritage concentration from Pratt Institute (2012) and a BA in Dance (2001) from Mills College.
